Taxi drivers have today kicked off their sit down strike, paralyzing travel in and around the city.

The drivers are protesting against harassment by the Uganda Taxi Drivers and Operators Association., who manage public transport in the country.

They are opposed to the numerous fees charged with no accountability from the association and want the government to intervene.

Passengers were this morning stuck at different locations and many had to resort to using motor cycles as the main means of transport.

The taxi parks which are normally a hive of activity today had minimal traffic, with the cars plying upcountry routes mainly working.

Fares around the city have also been increased by an average of 500/= for the few taxis working while there have been reports of attacks on some of the striking drivers.

The fares have also been doubled in areas such as Kireka and Bweyogerere.

The Vice President Edward Sekandi is set to meet the aggrieved drivers later this afternoon in a bid to address the issues affecting them.
