Five people have died in a road accident that occurred this afternoon along the Mbale-Kampala highway at Jami village in Kamonkoli sub-county, Budaka district.
The Bukedi regional Traffic Officer Paul Okongo said the driver of the Cranes Bus No.UG. 573M that was travelling from Soroti to Kampala lost control after one of the tyres got off.
The bus then swerved off to the right side of the road hitting head an Omnibus head on, killing five of its occupants on spot.
He said the Cranes Bus was coming from Soroti after the players went to meet the president and to present the trophy they won at the recently concluded CECAFA competitions in Ethiopia where they emerged winners.
Meanwhile, earlier Hassan Kirunda, a FUFA official who was traveling with the team confirmed that three Uganda Cranes players have been injured in the accident.
He said that those injured are Dennis Okot, Isaac Muleme and Kezron Kizito and are receiving treatment at Mbale hospital to treatment.
The other injured have also been rushed to Mbale regional referral for treatment while the bodies of the deceased have been taken to the mortuary at the same hospital for postmortem.
Traffic Police have only identified two bodies of the diseased as Charles Mwima and Wahab Nakifuyi.
Police have attributed the accident to fatigue, reckless driving and over speeding.
