Thousands of Christians have thronged the Namugongo Shrines in Kampala in remembrance of the Uganda Martyrs who were murdered over their faith.
The 45 Catholics and Anglicans were killed on the orders King Mwanga II between 1885 and 1887.
Christians have come in from different countries including Kenya, Tanzania, Democratic Republic of Congo and Malawi.
The martyrs suffered cruel death including being beheaded, burnt, speared, castrated and sometimes ravaged by dogs.
Prayers are being held at both the Catholic and Anglican Churches .
At the Catholics shrine, the celebrations are led by Arua Diocesan Bishop Sabino Ochan Odiki, while Namirembe diocese will lead at the Anglican side.
The Vice President Edward Kiwanuka Ssekandi and Prime Minister Amama Mbabazi are expected to be chief guests at the respective shrines.
Meanwhile pilgrims heading to the Namugongo Martyrs shrines have been advised to follow the set traffic guidelines to ensure smooth movement.
According to the guidelines, the road from Kireka to Namugongo is one way while vehicles from the Jinja side heading to Kampala are diverted at Seeta to create way for vehicles heading to the shrine.
The Kampala Metropolitan police spokes person Ibin Ssenkumbi says no vehicle will be allowed beyond Kyaliwajala trading centre.
Senkumbi says the road from Kyaliwajala to Namugongo will be used only by pedestrians and different parking places have been reserved.
