Majority of leaders have failed to beat the deadline to declare their wealth forcing the Inspector General of Government extend the mandatory exercise for one month.

Addressing the media in Kampala this morning, the IGG Justice Irene Mulyagonja has announced an extension of the declaration period to 21st April 2017, to ensure that all leaders submit their declarations as required by law.

She says that during this declaration year, the Inspectorate of Government had expected 25,000 leaders to make their declarations.

However, out of the 18, 442 email addresses and telephone contacts received and registered on the online declaration system, only 12,671 have logged into the system and just 11,873 have submitted.

Mulyagonja adds that out of 402 Members of Parliament 326 (81 percent) have declared their wealth.

In the judiciary 96 officials were invited and so far 65 (67.7 percent) have complied while Police 3,163 were expected but only1.419 (44.8 percent) have filled the forms.

In local government out of 4,758 officials, 2,683 (56percent) submitted,” she said.

She has warned the leaders that failure to declare their income, assets and liabilities is a breach of the Leadership Code Act, 2002 which attracts dismissal or vacation from their leadership positions.
