The United Nations environment agency has said that urgent action is needed to halt and reverse biodiversity loss.

The UN Environment Programme (UNEP) says healthy ecosystems are a source of food, water, medicine, shelter, and more, yet human activities have profoundly altered most terrestrial habits.

This comes as Uganda continues to grapple with floods and mudslides resulting from heavy rains that have pounded Kigezi sub-region for days, and claimed at least 16 lives this week.

On Tuesday, floods cut off more than 10 villages in Ntoroko, and destroyed property in three districts of Kigezi sub-region.

Meanwhile, on Thursday, about 50 cargo trucks, passenger vehicles, and dozens of cyclists and pedestrians were left stranded at Hamurwa village in Rubanda district along Kabale-Kisoro road after a section of the road caved in.

The Uganda National Roads Authority (UNRA) station manager for the Kabale area, Arison Abenabo, says she is mobilizing resources to fix the road.
