Derek Debru, the co-founder and creative director of the controversial Nyege Nyege festival that kicks off today, Thursday, September 15  says they target to create more jobs, promote trade and talent in the arts and music industry.

The annual festival attracted a heated debate amongst public members after parliament attempted to block it with speaker Anita Among saying they would not allow the event to take place for the country’s morality.

In a turn of events, premier Robinah Nabbanja okayed the festival on the condition that set guidelines would be followed.

Now Debru tells KFM that the event that has attracted participants from across the globe will go on as planned and they are observing all set guidelines from the ICT ministry and police.

“We’ve always observed the guidelines, we’ve never encouraged vulgarity, orgies, and nakedness so we’re really comfortable with those guidelines. It is a music and arts festival that has a social purpose which is to create jobs, bring tourists, and to promote under-represented musicians,” Debru told KFM.
