The Member of Parliament representing workers Arinaitwe Rwakajara, has been granted leave to introduce a private members bill, the parliamentary pension’s amendment bill.

Rwakajara has informed parliament that the current law does not take into account the new developments in the industry which has led to challenges in implementation of the scheme.

In his motion, he informed MPs that the process of one getting a recommendation letter from Uganda medical board is lengthy and burdensome which makes it hard for members under the scheme to access funds for medical treatment and retirement on medical grounds.

Rwakajara also wants the rate of contribution to be reviewed and distribution of funds to survivors be aligned to the succession Act, and also make it easier for pensioners to access affordable health care.

The Minister of Public service Muruli Mukasa has welcomed the amendments but has asked the Member of Parliament to work with the ministry of public service so that they can bring a comprehensive law to parliament to also consider the emoluments of the speaker and deputy speaker.
