Court bailiffs acting on behalf of Ugachick Poultry Breeders have raided Uchumi stores at Garden City demanding payment for the supply of chicken for an unspecified period of time.
They say they learnt from unofficial sources that the supermarket was closing shop and they need to get paid Shs185 million.
Uchumi has been embroiled in a financial setback that has seen it close a number of branches with the most recent being Kabalagala and Nateete leaving over 180 workers jobless.
Uchumi supermarket was in August dragged to the Commercial Court for failure to pay for supply of dressed chicken to the chain store’s various branches in Kampala.
According to Ugachick executive director Aga Sekalala, the chicken was supplied between March and July 2015 on a credit understanding but the supermarket has not met its obligation thus occasioning loss to his business.
The court registrar Thaddeus Opesen then issued out summons ordering Uchumi supermarket to respond to these claims within 10 days which they never responded to.
