The country is off track regarding achieving goal number five of reducing maternal mortality by 2015.

Prof. Fred Sengoba of Makerere School of public Health says although 2013 figures indicate that the maternal death rates have reduced, with 146 recorded per 100,000 live births, the numbers still remain extremely high.

Prof Sengoba notes that expectant mothers continue to report late to hospital, while deaths resulting from abortion also on the.
Prof. Sengooba made these remarks while presenting a paper on the Millenium Development Goals during the 20th Joint Health Sector Review
According to the review, Nagulu Hospital recorded the least number of maternal deaths while Mbarara had the highest.
