Parliament has this afternoon issued guidelines to be followed by both candidates and members of parliament while voting for Uganda’s representatives to the East African Legislative Assembly.
According to the Cerk to Parliament Jane Kibirige, there is no ring fencing of slots to a particular a political party.
Kibirige says all the 47 candidates have equal chances since the members of parliament will vote for nine candidates each, taking into consideration all shades of opinion represented in the House.
The new guidelines break the status quo where the ruling National Resistance Movement had six out of the nine slots, leaving only two for the opposition and one for independents.
Meanwhile, the opposition Forum for Democratic Change National Secretary for Mobilization Ingrid Turinawe has welcomed the announcement of election guidelines for tomorrow’s EALA elections with excitement.
Speaking to the media shortly after the Clerk’s meeting with all the 47 candidates, Turinawe said the announcement gives chance for FDC to shine despite earlier controversy about her candidature
