Uganda People’s Defence Forces soldiers and police officers had to abandon their standby duty of maintaining peaceful at NRM elections to contain a fire which gutted four shops along Bombo road.

According to Geoffrey Kaheebwa the deputy police commander Kampala South, the fire which razed down four shops, was caused by spirit which was over stocked in one of the shops the previous evening and because of the weight, the shelves gave way forcing the spirits to fall down and burst into flames.

Also affected was a dental equipment shop where nearly nothing was saved.

Another shop which had stocked motorcycle tyres barely had anything to show while the shop which contained the liquor had a few bottles of the Vodka and Whisky still simmering.

The fire brigade struggled to put out the fire until their trucks ran out of water and military police was called in to help.

The Chief Fire Officer Joseph Mugisa says preliminary investigations indicate that this fire might have been caused by spirits from one of the shops.
Mugisa however says the timely intervention of police has been hampered by the inaccessibility of the building.
