Land grabbing hits Kalangala

Land shortage in Kalangala district, has triggered increasing land grabbing especially on school land.

The most affected area is Bugala Main Island in Bujumba sub –county were 12 acres of Buswa Primary School have been grabbed by school neighbors.
Since the inception of the palm oil growing, Kalangala has faced challenges that include land grabbing and depletion of the islands’ forest cover.

According to Innocent Abaasa, the principal Ssese Agricultural Farm Institute Principal, the institute also faces a similar problem where it has lost much of its land to residents of Kizzi village in Kalangala town council.
The Kalangala resident district commissioner Caleb Tukaikiriza, said the matter is being handled by security as verification of claims by several squatters are being done.
