A group of 22 law lecturers from Makerere University have asked parliament to consider shelving the motion that seeks to remove presidential age limits.

The group led by associate professor Christopher Mbaziira says the speaker backtracked on her position by allowing the proposal by Igara  West MP Raphael Magyezi yet she had earlier rejected a similar bill by Nakifuma MP Robert Kafeero Sekitoleko seeking to amend the retirement age of judicial officers.

Yesterday Magyezi tabled the bill in parliament for the first reading and the Speaker Rebecca Kadaga referred it to the Committee on Legal and Parliamentary Affairs for further scrutiny.

The lawyers have also accused the speaker of failure to follow the parliamentary rules of procedure in suspending the 25 legislators.

They further argue that the speaker’s actions on Thursday last week were a surrender of her powers by exposing parliament to the executive arm of government in particular the army and police.
