President Museveni has directed the Ministry of Public Services to raise the salaries of science dead teachers and their deputies in all secondary schools across the country.

In a July 1st letter addressed to the Minister of Public Service, Wilson Muruli Mukasa, the president says he received a letter from the Minister of Education Janet Museveni, who also serves as the First Lady, stating that salaries of head and deputy teachers had not been enhanced.

In the same letter, the minister also informed him that science teachers who are head teachers and deputy head teachers are being penalized for holding those appointments.

He said that this is completely irrational, saying that all science teachers should be paid as such until the government has enough funds to pay all teachers well, and then they can revisit the rank of head teacher.

The 300 percent pay rise that was given to science teachers resulted in a graduate and grade V teachers’ pay increase to Shs4 million and Shs3 million, up from 1Shs.1 million and Shs796,000.

Aron Mugaiga, the general secretary of the Uganda Professional Science Teachers Union (UPSTU), commended President Museveni for enhancing the salaries of these science school heads.

Minister Muruli stated that the President’s directive is being worked on.
