Uganda continues to perform dismally in maternal health with pregnant women accessing antenatal care only four times.

This is against the World Health Organization’s recommendation of accessing antenatal care eight times.

Speaking to KFM, the ministry of health Permanent Secretary Dr. Diana Atwiine says the fact that most mothers know about their pregnancies much later, makes it difficult to increase contact between them and health care providers.

She notes that majority of the mothers are not aware about the importance of visiting their doctors regularly requiring more sensitization.

A new antenatal care model released by WHO shows that increasing the number of contacts a pregnant woman has with health providers throughout her pregnancy up to at least eight times is associated with a reduced likelihood of stillbirths.
