Judiciary holds special Supreme Court session in honour of late Justice Kanyeihamba

A special Supreme Court session is currently underway at the Judiciary Headquarters in Kampala to honor the late Justice George Wilson Kanyeihamba, a distinguished jurist, academic, and politician.
The session, chaired by Chief Justice Alfonse Chigamoy Owiny-Dollo, is attended by Attorney General Kiryowa Kiwanuka, representing the government.
Justice Kanyeihamba, served as a Justice of the Supreme Court of Uganda from 1997 to 2009 and inaugural judge of the African Court on Human and Peoples’ Rights.
He also served as Chancellor of Kampala International University and Kabale University, and lecturer at various universities.
He wrote several books, including “Kanyeihamba’s Commentaries on Law, Politics and Governance” and “Constitutional Law and Government in Uganda.
He demonstrated strong commitment to constitutionalism, justice, and human rights throughout his life, known for integrity, moral leadership, and bravery in upholding the independence of the Judiciary.
Justice Kanyeihamba passed away on July 14, 2025, at Nakasero Hospital, and will be laid to rest on July 29, 2025, at his home in Buziga, Makindye Division in Kampala District.
According to the burial program released by the family, on Friday, the family will receive mourners at their Buziga home before ahead of a church service to be held at the All Saints Cathedral Nakasero on Monday next week, an official vigil at Kabojja International School, Buziga and finally burial will take place on Tuesday at the family’s Buziga residence.
