The Police have justified the recruitment of more 36,000 special constables on top of 110,000 crime preventers ahead of the February general elections.
According to the police spokesperson Fred Enanga, these constables to be recruited from the general public and crime preventers will receive basic training in election policing.
Enanga adds that according to Article 64 of the Police Act, the police chief has powers to recruit special constables to meet a specific need.
He explained that these are not permanent police officers so they will be disbanded within two months after elections.
This follows deployment of 150,000 police officers to secure the February polls.
