Security has been tightened at Makerere University ahead of a planned fundraiser by the opposition Forum for Democratic Change (FDC).
The party led by its former presidential candidate Dr Kiiza Besigye plans to conduct a fundraising campaign at the university’s Freedom Square to raise to raise Makerere University’s lecturers’ incentive arrears amounting to Sh28bn.
The University remains closed on the directive of the president after the academic staff went on strike protesting nonpayment of their incentive arrears.
According to Dr. Besigye they intend to collect money and any other items that can be auctioned to raise funds.
However, the Officer in Charge of Makerere Police Post, Dennis Kasibante says no one is allowed to access the university as all gates have been locked.
Kasibante says only people working in the bank, construction sites, or those going to church and the infectious disease institute with clear identification will be allowed enter.
