Older persons seek special court to handle land wrangles
BY Moses Ndhaye
The National Council for Elderly Persons has asked the government to designate a special court that will handle land-related cases involving elderly persons.
The Council chairperson Mr Charles Isabirye, says older persons in Uganda have consistently suffered in silence, and denied their property rights without redress
He says that when these older persons go to court, due to a case backlog, their cases take a long time to be heard and due to advanced age and vulnerability to illness, some even die without getting justice.
‘’And when it goes to courts of law it can take more than ten years with a case of land, by the time the case will be through that person will be dead, it’s also embarrassing seeing someone chasing an older woman because their husband has died’’, Mr. Isabiye said.
Mr. Isabiye was officiating at the event held in Kampala to commemorate the World Awareness Day against Elderly Abuse, under the theme; “Strengthening Coordination to End Elderly Abuse,’’
