International relief organizations operating in the Western refugee camps of Uganda have asked governments to review the existing policy and provide adequate maternity leave and breastfeeding facilities at workplaces.
During celebrations to mark the World Breastfeeding Week in Kyaka 2 and Rwamwanja refugee settlements, Kyegegwa district, the Adventist Development and Relief Agency (ADRA) Uganda REAL project manager, Jerry Kiwanuka noted that breastfeeding is crucial for achieving Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) 2 and 3, focusing on zero hunger and good health and well-being.
“Article 40, (4) of the Uganda Constitution, mandates employers to protect the rights of women regarding maternity,” he said
The event was organised under the theme, “Prioritize breastfeeding, Create Sustainable Support Systems.”
Mr. Ronald Mugabi, an official from the Ministry of Health said when it comes to breast feeding, Uganda is short of the global target by 12 percent.
“In Uganda, only 48 percent of Ugandan children are exclusively breastfed, falling short of the global target of 60%,” he said.
ADRA Uganda’s efforts is to supplement mothers’ and children’s nutrition through smart climate agriculture and goat rearing projects.
This event was aimed to promote sustainable support systems for breastfeeding mothers in refugee settlements and host communities.
