African leaders’ silence on Zimbabwe criticized by analysts

By Benjamin Jumbe & Ritah Kemigisa

Political analysts say the limited condemnation of what has happened in Zimbabwe by other African leaders is proof of support to the development.

This comes a day after President Robert Mugambe of Zimbabwe lost his grip on power following a government take-over by the military.

Now Dr Gerald Karyeija, a political commentator says what happened was proof that the people’s endurance had been stretched to the limit.

He says the people of Zimbabwe are tired of dominance of families in the country’s top leadership which should serve as a lesson to all African leaders.

The Forum for Democratic Change Party Eastern Vice President Salaamu Musumba has blamed the position of First Lady for the distortion of democracy on the African continent.

Referring to the situation in Zimbabwe, Musumba says Grace Mugabe used her title of First Lady to interfere with the country’s governance issues.

Musumba adds that First Ladies have been pampered and this has become a threat to democracy.
She says the position of First Lady must be interrogated if democracy is to have it’s true meaning in Africa.

Meanwhile President Robert Mugabe is reportedly refusing to step down immediately, despite growing calls for his resignation.

There has been no official word on the outcome of talks he had with regional envoys and the army chief earlier.

But sources say he has so far refused to agree to move aside. Five countries have now joined the Mugabe exit talks with Roman Catholic Priest Fidelis Mukonori, his trusted confidant acting as a negotiator with the military and other bodies.

In a related development, President Mugabe has made his first public appearance since the country’s army took over on Wednesday.

He attended a graduation ceremony in the capital, Harare and was cheered by the crowd at the after he spoke.

He joined the crowd in singing the national anthem and walking slowly up a red carpet.
