Uganda has been lauded for playing a constructive role in bolstering security across the region especially in Somalia and South Sudan.
The Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) Chief of Defence Forces Gen. Katumba Wamala announced this afternoon, that Uganda had started pulling out its troops from South Sudan.
Troop withdrawal was a key rebel demand during protracted talks which led to a peace deal in August and all foreign forces were meant to have left by 10 October.
In an earlier interview with KFM, the German Ambassador to Uganda Dr.Peter Blomeyer said the withdrawal of troops is the step in the right direction despite the fact that it is a fragile process.
UPDF troops deployed in South Sudan shortly after violence broke out in December 2013 pitting President Salva Kiir against his former Deputy Riek Machar.
It followed disagreements between the two leaders over political reforms needed to steer the country.
Ugandan troops were then deployed to evacuate Ugandan citizens from South Sudan and also to protect key installations and institutions, including the airports in Juba and other sensitive locations within the country.
