The 81 year old iconic Makerere University main, the Ivory tower that caught fire in 2020 is to be demolished in two weeks to pave way for construction.

The building caught fire on November 20th, 2020 and has since developed cracks.

The historic building is unique and is the university’s most recognisable symbol and also keeps crucial records and documents that date way back kept in various offices.

The university management has since handed over the site to contractors, excel Construction Company for the new project.

The university Vice Chancellor, Prof Barnabas Nawangwe says the building is expected to be completed before the University’s century celebration in August.

He says they award the contract to excel Construction Company because out of the eight companies that applied, they emerged the best and their charges are affordable.

According to Prof Nawangwe, Parliament approved a supplementary budget shs 201 billion for the construction works and is now asking the ministry of finance to release the funds as soon as possible.
