conjoined twins

The Siamese twins who were recently admitted at Mulago Hospital are both dead.

The first twin passed on yesterday afternoon, while the second one died in the evening at around 8:30 pm.

Apio and Adong were born on the 4th of May this year at Ngora Hospital, from where they were referred to Mulago Hospital with hope for an operation to have them separated.

Together, the babies weighed 4.46Kgs but could not be operated upon until they reached 10 kgs.

They however developed flue and cough and later pneumonia, factors that largely compromised their frail health.

At the time of their death, their father Mesial Okirol had left the hospital to prepare his other children for school. Their mother died during delivery, leaving Okirol to take care of the family single handedly.

Conjoined twins are a rare phenomenon that is estimated to range from 1 in 50,000 births to 1 in 200,000 births, with a somewhat higher incidence in Southwest Asia and Africa.
