Campaign for reforms won’t affect us – EC

The work of the Electoral Commission (EC) will not be affected by the ongoing campaign by the opposition to popularise electoral reforms, the EC chairperson, Mr Badru Kiggundu, has said.

He made the remarks while briefing the media in Kampala yesterday about the commission’s preparations for the forthcoming Bubulo County West and Luweero Woman MP Parliamentary by-elections.

“I am not bothered by whatever noise is made about electoral reforms out there but what will matter is what will be passed in Parliament,” Mr Kiggundu said.
“As an institution, we are listening to various recommendations but we have also put forward ours, it is up to government to choose which electoral reform ideas to go through,” he  added.

Opposition and civil society organisations are traversing the country under the ‘Campaign for Free and Fair Elections Now,’ to generate support for the push for electoral reforms so that they are enacted by Parliament.

Meanwhile, campaigns in Bubulo County West ended yesterday with the polls expected on April 10.

“I must say campaigns have been largely peaceful and I want to commend the candidates for this. Adequate administrative, logistical and security arrangements have been made to ensure that all polling stations have their materials and open polling on time,” Mr Kiggundu said.

Preparations for the Luweero by-election as well as polls to fill the vacancies existing at various Local Government councils in the district are underway.

Ms Brenda Nabukenya (DP) lost her seat when the Court of Appeal ruled she was not duly elected. The poll will take place on May 22.
