The East African Community (EAC) has released its preliminary report on the conduct of last Sunday’s elections in Tanzania, expressing concern over disputes often arising from the results of the presidential elections.
In a statement, the Head of the EAC Observer Mission Moody Awori says there is need for establishment of a mechanism for management of disputes arising from the results of presidential elections.
Awori, the former vice president of Kenya who heads a 55-member team has criticized the current system under which, once declared by the electoral commission, the presidential results are not contestable.
The report comes amid claims by the Coalition of People’s Constitution (Ukawa) that the way the presidential results were being announced by NEC favoured the ruling party, Chama cha Mapinduzi , an allegation the Commission has vehemently refuted.
Until mid-day yesterday Ukawa’s Lowassa was trailing Dr. Magufuli in the number of votes announced by NEC from its operational centre in Dar es Salaam.
The National Election Commission of Tanzania is expected to announce the final outcome of Sunday’s presidential election tomorrow.
