Kashaka’s sentence not deterrent

ACCU ED Cissy Kagaba

Government is asked to expedite the amendment of Anti-Corruption Act to provide for more stringent punishment for corrupt officials.

This follows the sentencing of former local government permanent secretary to 10 years in prison for causing financial loss of over 4bn shillings in botched bicycle deal.

Cissy Kagaba the executive director of the Anti-Corruption Coalition Uganda says the 10 year sentence that was handed to John Kashaka is not deterrent enough.

She explains that the existing law must be revised to suit the growing levels of corruption.

Kashaka and five others were yesterday handed various sentences by the Anti-Corruption Court for the embezzlement of money that was meant for purchase of 70,000 bicycles for LCs and parish chiefs to ease their work.
