Local Traders’ Protest Paralyses Business In Lira Town

Business has been paralysed in Lira town as local traders protest what they call unfair competition from foreigners especially those of Asian origin.
Several shops owned by foreigners have remained closed after local traders reportedly threatened to attack anybody who would dared open their businesses today.
The local traders accuse the foreigners of lowering prices, an action they say has left many without any profit.
However, Deo Kibirige the chairman of Uganda National Chambers of Commerce and Industry, Lira branch said that the local business people are acting selfishly.
North Kyoga regional police spokesperson, David Ongom Mudong, says they will not allow anybody to disrupt business in Lira Town.
