MUASA threatens to strike over 70% incentive

Muhammad Kiggundu

Makerere University staff has issued a 3-day ultimatum to clear their May and June incentives.

In a letter to the university council, the staff is advising the university not to open for the new semester if their incentive amounting to over Shs 4billion is not cleared.

Last year the university council approved a 70% incentive to all Makerere staff following a two week-staff strike.

The chairman Makerere University academic staff Association Dr. Mohamed Kigundu says the university should explain why the incentive has not been cleared yet all the students cleared their tuition last semester.

The university spokesperson Ritah Namisango has acknowledged receipt of the letter, adding that management is negotiating with the staff.

Namisango added that the university is currently under a financial crisis and unable to clear the lecturer’s incentives.

Meanwhile the student’s Guild president Ivan Bwowe has advised the two parties to sort out their issues before the beginning of the semester to avoid any inconveniences.
