Opposition rejects phone levy

Opposition Leader Wafula Oguttu

A proposal by Parliament’s Budget committee to have mobile users taxed annually as one of government’s revenue collection points has been rejected by the Opposition.

The proposal by Shadow Finance Minister, Geoffrey Ekanya seeks to have every mobile phone user pay an annual fee of 5000 in a bid to raise more revenue for government.

However, Leader of Opposition in Parliament, Wafula Oguttu contends that though government needs more avenues to raise revenue, taxes on phones will strain the purses of taxpayers.

Meanwhile members of the public have expressed mixed reactions regarding the proposed levy on mobile phone users.

Uganda has an estimated 17.5 million mobile users, with this tax expected to raise about 85 billion annually if adopted by Parliament.
