KAMPALA: Defense Chiefs from 27 African countries meet in Kampala today to discuss emerging security threats from cyber warfare and artificial intelligence to terrorism, climate change, pandemics and border security during a four-day inaugural conference on Military Operations other than war.
Hosted by Uganda’s Chief of Defence Forces, Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba, the conference also brings together peace support mission commanders on the continent, representatives of the African Peace and Security Architecture and regional security bodies.
Last week, the acting spokesperson of the UPDF Col Chris Magezi issued a statement where he highlighted that the conference will focus on emerging and non-traditional security challenges confronting African States and the need for responses that go beyond conventional military operations.
The key themes scheduled for discussion will include transnational threats, cybersecurity and artificial intelligence, unmanned aerial systems, peace support operations, gender mainstreaming among others.
Participating countries include Kenya, Comoros, Djibouti, Ethiopia, Ghana, Malawi, Rwanda, Somalia, South Africa, and Tanzania among others.
