PFF condemns police for blocking planned procession

The People’s Front for Freedom (PFF) has condemned Uganda Police for blocking its planned peaceful procession to the office of the Chief Justice today in Kampala to deliver its petition about continued denial of medical bail to its leaders.

Addressing the media at the party’s office along Katonga Road in Kampala on Monday afternoon, the Vice National chairman, Dr. Lulume Bayiga, said PFF had notified police of the peaceful procession that was scheduled for Monday, September 14, 2026 at 11am, from its headquarters to the office of the Chief Justice, wondering why they were blocked.

According to the party, the procession was meant to deliver a petition demanding bail on medical grounds for its jailed leader Dr. Kizza Besigye and the party’s national chairman Erias Lukwago.

Dr Bayiga highlighted that blocking peaceful citizens from petitioning the judiciary is an attack on democracy, rule of law and human rights- the very values PFF stands for.

“This Kind of Deployment molests the constitution and also violets human rights, however we want to commend the Police for not molesting me personally while i asked to access this Office, and I would seek an audience with the Inspector General Of Police, because he ought to know that  registered Political Parties are lawful Institutions and they are manned by people who know what to do,” Bayiga  said.

Speaking to KFM earlier, the PFF Deputy Secretary General, Kennedy Okello, said the protest was meant to seek answers from the Chief Justice over the continued denial of bail to the two ailing party leaders who are currently on remand at Luzira prison.

He said the duo; founder of the party, Dr. Kiiza Besigye and its National Chairman, Erias Lukwago has made several unsuccessful attempts at bail on medical grounds.

And according to Okello, the party had informed the police chief in good time and did not expect any obstructions from the security personnel.

“We informed them that we are going to have a peaceful procession from our offices at Katonga Road to the office of the chief justice and the main issue was we were delivering a  petition in respect to the continued denial days medical grounds to Dr Kizza Besigye and Erias Lukwaago who are not in Good Health and they have been asking for bail,”Mr Okello said.

However, police spokesperson Kituuma Rusoke said he was not aware of any such communication, urging the PFF to come out publicly with the response they received from the Police Chief regarding their planned protest, without which the procession could not proceed.

“Usually what I advise in such situations is to make sure that they follow up and get feedback from IGP. If they are not content with the feedback, they should go back and challenge it,” Rusoke said.

By later afternoon, there was still visible presence of security personnel deployed around the PFF offices as well as at the Judiciary headquarters in the heart of Kampala
