More than 50 sex workers operating in Iganga town have asked police for security to enable them carry out their business efficiently.
The group made the request on during a meeting with security officials led by Iganga District Police Commander Nasibu Ndita.
The police had convened a meeting after receiving several complaints from members of the public that sex workers operating in bars and corridors along Iganga Main Street where stealing money and property from their customers.
The meeting was the first of the kind
Majidhu Nantatya the LC1 chairman of Nkono ward where majority of sex workers operate said the activities of the sex workers were causing insecurity in the area.
The sex workers however denied the allegations and said those who steal from customers come from other areas.
Led by their leader only identified as Nalongo popularly known as Kawomera, the group instead asked police for security.
In Uganda, prostitution is a crime and both the seller and buyer are liable upon conviction to a penalty prescribed in the law.
Section 139 of the Penal Code Act states that any person who practice or engages in prostitution commits an offence and is liable to imprisonment for seven years.
