The UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres has faulted the global media for not paying attention to the refugee crisis in Uganda.
Guterres made the remarks yesterday at the General Assembly side event on refugees and migrants as a follow up to the 2016 New York Declaration on Refugees and migrants which endorsed the need for greater international cooperation on the issue.
He told the gathering that the number of refugees that entered Uganda from South Sudan last year was three times greater than the number of those who crossed the central Mediterranean, yet movement across the central Mediterranean led to a crisis in public confidence and political debate in many countries, while the situation in Uganda which is a relatively small country went largely unreported by the global media.
He has called for fair representation of global challenges such as the refugee crisis and human mobility, warning that cases of xenophobia and intolerance are fuelled by negative perceptions about such issues.
