Members of the Uganda Peoples Defense Forces high command have distanced themselves from the ongoing debate on the proposed amendment bill of the article 102 b of the constitution of Uganda.
The amendment bill is being driven by majority of the members of parliament subscribing to the ruling National Resistance Movement as they seek to remove the presidential age limit in the constitution.
Despite an outburst by State Minister for Investment Evelyn Anite claiming that the UPDF was behind their move and ready to protect them, members of the High Command whom Daily Monitor spoke refused to be drawn into that debate.
Deputy Chief of Defense Forces Maj. Gen. Wilson Mbadi says minister Anite never consulted the army before she made her statements during a press conference at parliament last week.
Gen. Elly Tumwine who also sits on the UPDF High Command says there is no need to mix the army what he called “factional moves, divisive, uncalled for propaganda and unnecessary debate”.
Other generals that sit the High Command include; Salim Saleh, Jeje Odong and Maj. Gen. Matayo Kyaligonza.
The motion seeking leave of parliament to draft a constitutional amendment bill is expected to be tabled on the floor of the house today by Igara West MP Raphael Magezi.
