WHO clears Uganda on Neonatal Tetanus

The World Health Organization has declared Uganda among the countries with lowest cases of neonatal tetanus in the world.

Neonatal tetanus affects newly born babies especially if their mothers were not immunized against the same.

The Organization’s Country’s representative Joachim Saweka says Uganda now conforms to international standards with less than one case registered annually.

This is a tremendous drop from the situation in 1998, when Uganda was ranked 15th among the low income countries that registered the disease.

Saweka however says the country is not yet entirely free from the disease and urges government to mobilize the masses to maintain the achievement.

He says pregnant mothers should be further encouraged to embrace immunization programs if cases of the disease are to be totally avoided.
