90-90-90 HIV Prevention Target In Sight

The number of new HIV infections recorded will be greatly reduced if total viral suppression is achieved, according to the Centers for Disease Control Uganda country director

Mr.Stephen Wiersman was speaking in light of the 90-90-90 HIV target which aims at having 90 per cent of people knowing their HIV status, 90 per cent of those positive on treatment and 90 per cent of those on treatment having achieved viral suppression by 2020.

The project is aimed at helping HIV partners achieve the 90-90-90 target set by the United Nations through procuring of the necessary drugs and testing kits for HIV.

According to a 2013 study titled ‘Have the explosive HIV epidemics in sub-Saharan Africa been driven by higher community viral load?’ by Abu-Raddad, the viral load in West Africa, East Africa and Southern Africa are relatively higher than that of North America.

The study concluded that one in seven new HIV infections was directly attributable to the higher viral load.
