African Court Advises On Independent MPs Ban

The push by the ruling NRM for a total ban on independents in parliament has attracted the attention of the African Court on Human and Peoples’ Rights.

In their submissions to the Legal and Parliamentary Affairs committee regarding the constitutional amendments bill, the NRM’s deputy Secretary General Richard Todwong, said the presence of independents undermines the essence of multi-party politics.

However, in an exclusive interview with KFM, the Court’s President Augustino Ramadhani says the decisions made earlier on similar cases are binding to all AU state parties that have ratified the protocol.

Citing the Mutikila case in Tanzania, he says Uganda is bound by the courts decisions and so it’s no exception.
