Alcohol linked to HIV infection rate

Did you know that taking alcohol increases your chances of contracting HIV?

A study conducted by the Makerere University School of Public Health shows that the HIV prevalence rate among people who consume alcohol stands at 11%.

This is way higher compared to the 6% prevalence rate among those who do not drink alcohol.

Dr Nazarius Mbona, a senior lecturer at the school, says that many people lose the ability to make the right decisions and end up having unprotected sex after taking alcohol.

The study also shows that Ugandans take higher quantities of alcohol, upto three times compared to the Americans.

It is against this background that over 4000 scientists will convene in Kampala in June this year to design means of controlling the spread of HIV among those who take alcohol.
