Envoy calls for urgent deployment in Juba

David Kugonza | October 19, 2016

The Japanese ambassador to South Sudan is calling for urgent deployment of the Regional Protection Force in Juba to provide security.

Kiya Mashiko’s call comes a day after sacked Vice President Dr. Riek Machar vowed to return to his country

Machar who fled the country in August told the BBC that his rebel faction could negotiate a peace deal.

Speaking to Juba-based Eye radio, Amb Mashiko says some of the projects Japan was supporting are not progressing because of the conflict.

These include the construction of one of the main bridges in Juba worth over 40 million dollars.

He says the projects may resume if there are assurances on security, which he says could be possible after the deployment of the regional protection force.
