Kinyara sugar workers strike over poor work conditions

Over 600 employees of Kinyara sugar Works Ltd have gone on strike protesting what they describe as poor working conditions.

The sugar cane cutters and other casual laborers accuse the factory management of ignoring their demands for better healthcare, wages and formalizing their contracts.

The Midwestern Regional Police Commander Charles Ssebambulidde says they have deployed to ensure the workers do not turn violent.

The strike comes barely two weeks after 12 factory workers perished in a road accident when a Fuso lorry they were travelling in crashed at a junction along Masindi-Biiso-Wanseko road.

The factory management is yet to give its position on the matter.
