Mulago Hospital Selected For Global Typhoid Vaccination Project

The World Health Organization (WHO) has selected Mulago National Referral Hospital to join three others for a global network to pilot typhoid vaccination among others infections.

According to the WHO public information officer, Mr. Edmond Mwebembezi, the baseline data on typhoid will be critical for decision-making in countries where typhoid fever is still prevalent.

He adds that the surveillance team shall also look at other persistent infections in children aged 0 months to 15 years and also gather data that will equip policy makers with information to decide on vaccine use.

Meanwhile, the World Health Organisation estimates that 3.4 million cases of Typhoid are recorded annually, with the highest incidence in Africa usually in infants and young adults.
