The Parliamentary Commission has resolved to scrap the controversial Service Award item from the Parliament’s budget for the current financial year, 2026/2027.
This follows a storm that erupted during the 11th parliament after information about a service award to the then Leader of the Opposition Mathias Mpuuga, and the three backbench Commissioners was leaked to the public.
Mpuuga was allegedly awarded Shs500 million, while each of the three Commissioners reportedly received Shs400 million.
The Service Award sparked outrage in the House, with a number of legislators questioning its legality.
During its first sitting, the new Commission resolved to scrap the service award item from Parliament’s budget for this financial year saying it had tainted the image of the institution.
Manjiya County MP, John Baptist Nambeshe, one of the four backbench Commissioners notes that the decision is intended to restore sanity and public trust at Parliament.
