The opposition Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) party has reiterated a call on the government to fund the school feeding programme, beginning with the most vulnerable communities across the country.
This latest call comes as schools reopen for third term today, running until December 4th.
According to the Uganda Bureau of Statistics National Service Delivery Survey 2021, only 49 percent of government primary schools provide lunch to learners, while 16 percent reported that pupils go without lunch altogether.
Addressing the media at the party’s Head Quarter in Najjanakumbi, Vice Chairperson Centenary Robert, said the government needs to honour its pledges on feeding of learners.
He also urged the government to review the school year and re-organize it into two terms instead of three, arguing that this will give the children more time to rest.
“Indeed the a hungry child is an angry one, and there is no way a hungry child can concentrate and excel in their examination and expect them to good grades, we are aware that most government officials have their children going to international schools and get all privileges, and not pursuing the local Curriculum,” Centenary said.
According to the official 2026 school calendar, the third term will run for 82 days, ending on December 4th, 2026.
